Welcome to the Electron Microscopy Section

The department provides a full range of sample preparation, technical assistance and training in viewing and photographing specimens. We supply ultra-structural analyses of small specimens, including tissues, cells, sub-cellular organelles and small particles (nanomaterials) by Transmission Electron Microscopy. We can provide data, train users, and assist in design of experimental procedures. For new experiments by inexperienced users, it is recommended that you consult IRF staff before a project is started to ensure proper handling.

We have comprehensive facilities for specimen preparation and Transmission Electron Microscopy analysis. The suite houses a Hitachi H7100 Transmission Electron Microscope fitted with a 16 megapixel camera capable of high resolution imaging. Additionally, the adjacent preparation Laboratory Area provides 2 ultramicrotome areas and a Leica EM TP automatic tissue processor for the preparation of samples.

We aim to offer a comprehensive technical and advisory service for non-EM users and the facility is open to all staff, students and researchers from St George's University and other external academic institutions. Additionally we provide processing and imaging services to St. George's NHS Trust, processing up to 100 peripheral nerve and skeletal muscle biopsies annually.
TEM specimen preparation resources include:

• Routine processing and resin embedding of biological specimens
• Semi-thin and Ultra-thin sectioning
• Immunolabelling techniques
• Post staining techniques
• TEM analysis and image acquisition
• Negative staining and Methylcellulose/Uranyl Acetate embedding
• Processing and imaging of skeletal muscle and peripheral nerve specimens for St. George's NHS trust.

The Electron Microscopy Suite is open Monday-Friday. Service assistance is available 09:00-17:00.
